SimBuild 2024: Celebrating Two Decades

SimBuild 2024 marked the 20th anniversary of the first SimBuild conference, held in 2004. After hosting joint conferences with ASHRAE from 2014 to 2022, IBPSA-USA returned to hosting SimBuild as an independent conference in 2024 in Denver, CO. Held at the Hilton Denver City Center, SimBuild 2024 was a milestone event with over 300 attendees and 20 different countries represented.

Pre-Conference Enthusiasm

The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as the IBPSA-USA Steering and Scientific Committees launched their preparations in May of 2023. As the event program took shape, abstract submissions and review processes commenced, more and more members of the IBPSA-USA community were drawn into the fold. SimBuild 2024 was poised to be an outstanding success.

To kick off the conference, pre-conference workshops were offered to attendees:

  • Extracting Valid Building Performance Simulation Models from Revit Models using Pollination Revit Plugin, instructed by Chris Mackey & Mostapha Sadeghipour Roudsari, Ladybug Tools, LLC
  • ASHRAE 90.1-2019 Code Compliance Modeling, instructed by Birajan Bhandari and Nathan Kegel, IES
  • Creating Building Performance Simulation Models with Pollination Rhino, instructed by Chris Mackey & Mostapha Sadeghipour Roudsari, Ladybug Tools, LLC
  • Impactful Data Visualization, instructed by Alejandra Menchaca, AIRLIT studio & Guanzhou Ji, Carnegie Mellon

Keynote Highlights

The opening keynote at SimBuild 2024 set an inspiring tone for the event, reflecting on the past accomplishments of building performance simulation. Delivered by Chip Barnaby, Consultant, and past IBPSA President; Dru Crawley, Bentley Systems and IBPSA President; Sue Reilly, Founder of Group14 Engineering; and Ellen Franconi, PNNL, and moderated by conference co-chairs Carrie Brown, Resource Refocus and Supriya Goel, PNNL, “How Did We Get Here? Exploring Past Perspectives” challenged attendees to explore the evolution of building performance simulation over the past decades. Influential projects and historical milestones were discussed. Reflecting on past challenges and how the industry has adapted and learned from these obstacles, the panel also discussed their vision for the future.

The second keynote of SimBuild 2024 was delivered by Amy Jirón, Director of Building Decarbonization at the Colorado Energy Office, on the “Present State of the Industry”. Being tasked with designing policy and programs at the intersection of climate and the built environment for Colorado’s 2.5 million (!) buildings, Amy shared her commitment and insights to improving performance, comfort, safety, and resilience of buildings. Amy emphasized the need to work towards a future where the built environment is inclusive and solution-oriented.

To close out the conference, the third keynote on “Revolutionizing the Future” was delivered by Christopher Mackey, Ladybug Tools; Alejandra Menchaca, AIRLIT studio; and Zoltan Nagy, University of Texas. Moderated by Scientific Committee Chair and IBPSA-USA President, Nathaniel Jones, Arup, the panel offered a visionary outlook on the future of building performance simulation. They discussed potential challenges, emerging trends, and opportunities to drive the field forward.

Tours of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), organized by the IBPSA-USA EPSI Committee, and the Wind Tunnel Lab, organized by CPP Wind Engineering, were also key highlights of the pre-conference program.

Finally, HackSimBuild was also taking place in the days prior to SimBuild 2024 beginning. Over 35 participants and mentors formed teams and began collaborating in a design sprint to develop and test creative new approaches to building performance simulation. Congratulations to the following teams for their outstanding achievements at HackSimBuild 2024:

  • Best Simulation Practice Improvement: Team Lighthouse – Hunter Swope, Jongki Lee, and Gabriel Flechas
  • Most Creative Demonstration: GridSage – Harshika Bisht, Tuğçin Kırant, and Alex Chapin
  • People’s Choice: The Burrowing Ironbugs – Victor Braciszewski, Chris Mackey, and Mingbo Peng
  • Best Overall Hack (sponsored by Cyclone Energy)Hack Yeah – Hussein Al Jebaei, Nupoor Kansara, and Nick Smith

Program

The creation of a technically groundbreaking and engaging program for SimBuild 2024 was truly a labor of love from the Steering and Scientific Committees. Both committees worked tirelessly to curate sessions that showcased cutting-edge advancements in building simulation technology and fostered dynamic discussions on industry trends and challenges while also ensuring meaningful engagement for all participants.

Key elements of the conference program included:

  • Technical sessions featuring the work of over 150 authors
  • Lightning talks of 5-7 minute presentations on a specific topic
  • Non-paper presentations that follow a more traditional lecture-style presentation with slides
  • Full sessions on compelling topics in various formats (small or large groups, in a small or large room)
  • Impromptu sessions
  • Sponsor demos
  • Networking breaks and offsite activities
